Dawson County Humane Society - We need your help!

For those of you that know me, you've heard me talk about my volunteerism with the Dawson County Humane Society. I've been fostering kittens and cats for a little over a year for this organization, and I'm truly proud to be affiliated with this wonderful group of people. They saved, organized fundraisers, and gathered public and private support for over five years so that they could build a Shelter for the many homeless animals in our county. This group of people came together to make their dream of a "forever" home available for all of the dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that need their help, and it's a remarkable place with a truly dedicated group of people. But due to the economy, the County has reduced the financial support that they provide to the DCHS for the remainder of this year, and next year's budget has also taken a hit. In order to provide the level of care that we've come to expect for our furry friends, we will be forced to do it with less money, which means that everyone will have to step up.

I've made several dog and cat quilts and sold them at my vendor shows, giving the proceeds to the Humane Society in order for them to continue their good works. But this year, they need more financial support so I'm donating 100% of the proceeds from all of my remaining vendor events to the Shelter, and I'm asking for your support. Come visit me at my fall and holiday shows and shop for your friends, family, and of course, for yourself, too. I'll have lots of new quilts and quilted accessories to choose from, along with a nice variety of those special dog and cat quilts, too. And because our economy is still recovering, and money is tight for everyone, I've priced all of my quilts so that they are more than affordable - and still beautiful works of art!

I look forward to seeing you this Fall, and please keep all of the homeless animals on your mind and in your heart as we approach this wonderful Fall season!

This is definitely a worthy cause that needs help.

I have also held fundraisers for my local Humane Society in So. Cal. One simple way of raising funds, might be something you want to consider. I made fabric cat toys and stuffed them with homegrown catnip and a bit of polyester filling. I then put them in special plastic bags with labels. Actually, on the back of my labels it showed that "my cats" were doing this as a fundraiser for the Humane Society as they had been adopted from the shelter. The catnip bags sold for a couple of bucks at various craft shows, people willing to sell them where they worked, plus in a gift shop at the shelter. It wasn't a get rich fundraiser, but it did help and it took minimal time to make.

You may also want to check out www.kennelcomforters.blogspot.com, which is a project started by a friend that wants to ensure pets living in shelters have a warm & comfy bed (if they sleep well, they have a better chance of getting adopted).

Good luck!
