A colleague at my office has two adorable little girls (see above), and I was delighted to learn that the oldest daughter had recently learned to sew. Seems that she belongs to a small group of similar-age girls that get together once a week to take sewing lessons from a local sewing teacher.
Just hearing that brought back vivid memories of my mom at the sewing machine, stitching another beautiful dress for me or my sister, Sheri. We would go to Cloth World together, where we selected a pattern, the right fabric, the zipper, thread, buttons, and any additional trims necessary to give the dress that certain something! My mom is an excellent seamstress, as was her mother, too - I'm a third generation seamstress and quilter, and very proud of it!
Anyway, during the holidays, I gave my office friend some fabric and a little purse pattern to give to his daughter, knowing that she was probably ready for a new project. Today, I was surprised when his family showed up to go to lunch, and his daughter brought her new purse, made with the valentine fabric that I gave her. I couldn't have been more proud! And I promised her that I would send home with her dad a couple of pieces of Halloween fabric, and maybe she could make another little purse, and perhaps one for her little sister, too.
All great seamstresses start with simple project, perfecting their skills and trying new techniques as they develop their own style. Perhaps someday, we'll be wearing one of her creations, or carrying one of her handbags - and it always begins with the basics of Sewing 101!
