It's Officially "Kitten Season"!

Last month, the Dawson County Humane Society asked me to foster a pregnant female cat. She was more than half-way through her pregnancy (what most organizations deem appropriate for not aborting the kittens), and she continued to grow in girth until she looked like a ham on legs. Her name is Ceci, and she's a sweet tempered yellow domestic shorthair with the most amazing aqua blue eyes you've ever seen. On Sunday night, I knew her time was near when she became restless and followed me everywhere - up to the sewing room, into the master bath, sat at my feet while I cooked, and wanted my lap when I sat. So it was no surprise when I awoke at 4:15 a.m. on Monday morning to the sound of soft meows. Seems like she liked "under the bed" as her nesting spot, and was starting to feel those contractions! I rushed to place large towels under her, and within a very short time, she gave birth to five little kittens - two dark tabbies, two white, and one orange (sexes as yet unknown). The photo above shows just how cute they really are! Mother and kittens are doing just fine, and Ceci was up and around within a couple of hours, but with a trained ear and watchful eye towards the master bedroom where the kittens were cuddled together. Baxter, a young black male from a previous foster litter, sat with Ceci for most of the day, keeping her company. All of the other cats in the house stopped by to check out the newborns, some with more interest than others. Charley, my mom's big boy tuxedo who came to live with me in 2007, took one look, one sniff, and walked away, totally disinterested.

"C" names will be given to this litter - Cecile, Charlie - and I'm open to suggestion, too. Please send me your best "C" names for these cuties - or maybe I'll give them French names in honor of my trip to Paris next week !
