Five Little Darlings!
As some of you know, I support the Dawson County Humane Society in a couple of ways. Besides the occasional monetary contribution, I also donate cat/kitten food, and give 50-100% of the proceeds from my cat and dog quilts directly to DCHS. But, my favorite way to be involved is through the fostering of kittens and cats. When a Dawson County resident surrenders a litter of kittens or an adult cat to DCHS, there may not be an available space for the animal at the shelter. Foster homes are often needed to care for the kittens or cats until space becomes available, especially in the case of "bottle babies" - young kittens that have not been weaned from their mother. Their requirements are many - they must be bottle-fed, just like a human baby, until they are strong and their natural instincts take over and they can eat on their own. The litter of five (pictured above) was given to me by Jack Austin of DCHS on July 1, when they had just opened their eyes (usually when they are about two weeks old). The photo above was taken yesterday at Doc Mills' office, right before they were given their first distemper and wormer medications - they're now five weeks old. Look how healthy and lovable they are! They will be ready for spay/neuter mid-to-late August, then available for adoption through DCHS shortly thereafter. More foster parents are needed for animals that are awaiting processing (coming of age for spay/neuter), so if you're interested in helping, please contact the Dawson County Humane Society via the link on the blog. Many thanks from the cat rancher!
